About

Great educators have the ability to change lives. At Quinnipiac, our mission is to prepare our candidates for 21st-century careers in education as teachers, leaders and designers of learning environments and materials. We strive to empower our graduates to affect change within themselves and others to move toward a more just and equitable society.

We offer a variety of programs to prepare you for a range of jobs in the field of education. People with degrees in education not only work in schools; they work in corporations, in healthcare, in law organizations, in universities and in many other settings. In addition to their day jobs, these individuals are often athletic coaches, career advisors and community volunteers.

Our undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs immerse you in the art and science of teaching and learning. You’ll learn how to communicate effectively, structure engaging lessons and learning resources, manage a classroom and leverage educational technology. Most importantly, you’ll develop the skills to ensure that learners of all levels and backgrounds have every opportunity to succeed.

Classes are taught by accomplished faculty members with deep educational and industry experience. Small class sizes afford the opportunity for personal guidance and feedback for each student. Prospective classroom teachers will complete extensive fieldwork, which will give you both hands-on experience and the benefit of reduced tuition.

Whether you aspire to become a new teacher, switch career paths, move into administration or develop skills in the design of digital learning materials — we have programs for every career stage.

I landed an offer before I even graduated. That’s rare. It shows how well the program prepared me for the interview process. I still send my old professors questions and ideas about curriculum and pedagogy. They always make the time for me.

Program Info

Our graduate program in secondary education gives you the subject matter knowledge and teaching experience you need to profoundly impact the lives and futures of students in grades 7–12. By placing students in internships across 20 local school districts, our tuition remission program provides significant cost savings alongside valuable classroom experience.

Typically, secondary education teachers specialize in a particular subject area. If you have your bachelor’s degree, we offer an intensive program that allows you to earn your master’s degree in teaching and your teaching certification in five semesters. You’ll enter in the fall as a full-time graduate student and spend your first two semesters interning in a school while attending evening classes on campus.

To become a secondary educator, you will take three graduate content courses to promote a deeper understanding of your area of expertise, as well as multiple courses in teaching and learning, classroom management and adolescent development. Subject specialties include:

  • Biology
  • English
  • History
  • Mathematics

We have forged collaborative partnerships with several area schools to allow you to learn best practices in teaching while being an important part of that school’s educational team. We have partnerships with 20 school districts throughout the state of Connecticut. These districts understand the importance of providing high-quality teaching experiences and opportunities to learn for our teacher candidates in a real-time classroom environment.
