You must earn your Intermediate Administration and Supervision certificate to become a principal in Connecticut. This certificate will also allow you to serve as an assistant principal, program director, academic dean, curriculum director or assistant superintendent.
To earn your principal certificate in Connecticut, you’ll need to do a few things. These are the basic steps:
You’ll need a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
In Connecticut, you must have at least 50 months of appropriate teaching experience.
To become a principal in Connecticut, you must complete 15 graduate-level credits in educational administration. You will also need to complete three credits in special education. You will need a formal recommendation for certification from the graduate institution you attended.
You’ll need to pass the principal exams before you get your certificate. The exam varies from state to state. In Connecticut, you’ll take the Connecticut Administrator Test. It’s designed to ensure you have the knowledge and skills to fulfill your duties as a principal.
You must pass a criminal history and background check before becoming a principal in Connecticut. You will also need to complete the fingerprinting process.
You will apply for your certificate through the Connecticut Educator Certification System. You will need some additional documents, like your transcripts from degrees and coursework, documentation of professional experience, a recommendation from your university or college, and passing scores from your exam.
