Hear from Cindy Amoroso about using art to build a broader view of the world in Torrington Public Schools.
Torrington has a rich industrial history and is filled with a wide range of cultures. Growing up in the South, I wasn't exposed to a variety of cultures, yet I longed to expand my awareness. Teaching in Torrington with our growing diverse student population gives me opportunities to learn from my students about their cultures and about the world as they see it. My art classes become a celebration of all cultures and a foundation for a broader view of the world.
There is something quite inspiring about the art made by children. The freedom of expression can be quite pure, even in high school. The elements of emotion and personal choice reveal volumes about who they are and what they are experiencing. The fuel that feeds my desire to teach is listening as students share the inspiration for creating their own work, as well as observing them as they share their cultures and views with classmates during collaborative work.
